in the almost 5 years that jordan and i have been married i am embarrassed to say that i have never made a CAKE!
and i have 3 cake cook books. so i thought it was time i try and make one.
no better time than my child's 2 year birthday. homemade cake usually always tastes better than store bought anyway.
so i searched and searched my cake books and marked the recipes that looked the easiest and the yummiest.
the night before easton's birthday i tried to bake the cake that i thought sounded best.
if you ask jord ... i was stressing a little too much about it.
and it was no surprise that the cake didn't turn out! it smelt good but tasted disgusting! so we tossed it.
i was tired and it was late and i didn't want to try to make another one. so i went to bed.
every time i woke up to feed Luke, i thought about the cake. what was i going to do?
we already invited everybody over for CAKE and ice cream. should we just go buy one from the store?
morning came and i skimmed through the cake books again.
Buttermilk Devil's Food Cake with White Chocolate Frosting
there it was. the cake! if i follow the instructions exactly, i can't mess it up! right?
RIGHT. after it baked and smelled delicious ... it looked delicious too.
i let them cool for about 5 hours. long enough right? ... wrong!
i first put frosting in the middle of the two cakes then began frosting the top and sides.
a huge chunk fell from the side of the cake! what? i know i let it cool long enough?
i called jord in a frenzy ... but he had no sympathy. "it is fine, i am sure!" he said. "just hide it with frosting."
but i ran out of frosting.
so long story short ... i just kind of hid it ...
the cake didn't turn out like i had pictured it in my mind but like my mom-in-law said,
"it's made with love! and that is all that matters!"
but i do have to say it tasted pretty delish! and even better the next morning!
yup, easton, jordan, and i all had a piece for breakfast!
here is a good pic of the missing chunk!
a few days after easton's birthday i was browsing some blogs and lo and behold ... i found this!
it definitely puts mine to shame.
it definitely puts mine to shame.
a friends sister bakes and decorates cakes. maybe i will call her next time!
bonus pics.
somehow i missed these in the last post. these two were the morning of his birthday.
1. i loved his crazy hair
2. he had to get a pic with daddy before he left for work
and this one was the morning after his birthday. it may not look like a ton, but he got a TON for his birthday. he just might only get a few things for Christmas ... especially if jord has anything to do with it.
(i wish i would have taken a picture of the piles of garbage after unloading all of his toys from their boxes and from his little "party" the night before. it really did look like after opening gifts on Christmas morning.)
the cutest polo snow suit, a couple pairs of jeans, a few shirts, a hoodie, some boots, a leather jacket, handy manny's tools, 2 mr. potato heads, a couple of coloring books with crayons, Toy Story 2 (on his lap), a bunch of Hot Wheels monster trucks (not all of them are even pictured!), a bunch of fun toy story knick knacks in a tory story pail.
and NO, this is not all from us. a lot of the more spendy things are from g-pa and zee zee, and the cute pail of stuff is from
his buddies eva and beck. the rest is from us.

{inspiration for his cake}
as you already know, easton opened all of his birthday from grandpa and grandma at thanksgiving and they got him ALL things Toy Story ... this picture is proof!
the BUZZ on the chair that lights up when you squeeze his legs together, a Toy Story book with little toy figures and a layout of Andy's room, Toy Story (1) the movie, and of course the darling outfit he is wearing from H&M. oh ... and he is holding a Toy Story sippie cup!
thanks mom for getting him obsessed with Toy Story and giving me inspiration for his cute little birthday "party"
... even though it really wasn't a party.
... even though it really wasn't a party.

Yeah, baking can be pretty tricky!! I love all of his gifts, he is such a boy! All the toy story stuff is soo cute
I've learned that the more you stress out about baking, the more disatrous it seems to get. I bake all the time, and everything comes out great, unless I'm making it for something specific, it seems!
Your cake looks delicious. Homemade cakes are definitely the way to go; way better than store made.
He looks like he is one well loved little boy!
Oh, and I love the photo of him and his daddy. They both have some major hair going on!
